A holiday isn’t just about relaxation. Many travellers seek a balanced mix of R&R and the thrill of new experiences. Engaging in active pursuits offers numerous benefits, from boosting physical health to enriching your sense of well-being.

Family activity holidays can rejuvenate both body and mind, leaving you with unforgettable memories and, quite possibly, a new hobby. Whether you are surfing the waves or navigating rugged terrains on a mountain bike, adventure awaits at every turn.

Surfing

For those drawn to the sea, surfing offers an exhilarating way to enjoy beautiful coastal locations while building strength and balance. As you ride the waves, you engage your core muscles and improve your agility, making surfing both a physical and mental workout.

Learning to surf may seem daunting, but with the right approach, it’s an accessible and rewarding skill to acquire. Start with lessons from a qualified instructor who can guide you through the basics, from paddling to standing on the board.

Here are 2 destinations that are perfect for both learners and established surfers

Byron Bay, Australia

Known for its laid-back vibe and consistent waves, Byron Bay is a paradise for both beginners and seasoned surfers.

Oahu, Hawaii

Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing, and Oahu’s North Shore is legendary for its big waves during the winter months. Beginners can enjoy the more manageable waves at Waikiki Beach.

snorkling

Snorkelling or Scuba Diving

If you prefer exploring beneath the surface, snorkelling and scuba diving offer the chance to immerse yourself in vibrant marine life, coral reefs and even shipwrecks. These activities combine relaxation with heart-thumping adventure, as you glide through crystal-clear waters.

Snorkelling is accessible to all ages, requiring minimal equipment and no formal training. Simply grab a mask, snorkel, and fins, and you’re ready to explore.

Scuba diving, on the other hand, requires more preparation, including certification and guided dives, but it’s well worth the effort for the chance to explore deeper waters. Pick up your underwater camera and away you go!

Top destinations for snorkelling and scuba diving include:

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

As the world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef is a bucket-list destination for snorkelling and diving.

The Maldives

Many resorts have house reefs, allowing you to snorkel directly from the beach, while dive excursions can take you to stunning coral gardens.

mountain biking

Mountain Biking

For an adrenaline rush, mountain biking provides the perfect way to move about dense forests, rocky mountains and arid deserts. Not only does it offer a full-body workout, but it also allows you to connect with nature in an exhilarating way.

Mountain biking can be tailored to different skill levels, with trails ranging from easy paths to challenging routes with steep descents. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, there’s a trail out there that will push your limits and provide an unforgettable ride.

Top mountain biking destinations include:

Whistler, Canada

Renowned for its world-class downhill biking, Whistler offers a vast network of trails that cater to all skill levels.

Tuscany, Italy

The region allows you to combine fast-paced biking with cultural exploration.

Have you ever travelled to a destination to take part in an activity, sport, retreat, or tick off a hike or nature spot? Would love to hear about your favourite destinations for action sports and outdoor pursuits.

Tips for Planning a Teenager Birthday Party

birthday party

My eldest is turning 14 later this month and organising a teen birthday party is definitely different to that of a young child and in some ways it's a little more pressure to get it right. Teens have ever-changing needs and sometimes it can feel hard to keep up, but like many things less can be more, asking them to focus on their core group of friends and putting together something special for a smaller number of young people can take some of the pressure away. In this short article, we offer a few tips for parents who are planning a birthday get-together for their teenager.

Embrace the event – Involve your teen in the planning stages and aim to be inclusive without being too authoritative, if that makes sense, try to see things from your teen's perspective even when you don't agree work to find a middle ground.

Discuss do’s and don’ts - Make sure you sit down together and come up with a few do’s and don’ts, which will help to avoid any issues as clear communication is key. When teens have a say in the planning stages they are more likely to be responsible. Of course, a lot depends on their age, an 18th birthday bash would be very different to a 13th birthday party.

Control the numbers – it can be easy for things to get out of control, especially with social media, the last thing you want is a few hundred teenagers descending on your home, I've seen this happen before when I was a teen attending parties. Ask your teen to create a guest list, then sit down together and come to an agreement, it is worth noting that the more people you invite, the harder it will be to keep things in order as well as being more expensive, as I mentioned earlier, less is more.

Let them choose a new outfit – They are the host after all, so where birthday dresses are concerned, give a budget and leave it to them to choose their own outfit. It is important for your teen's self-esteem that they feel good in what they are wearing on the day and helps them feel relaxed and confident.

cupcakes

Set limits – Whether you are having the party at your home or a special venue, there needs to be limits, so sit down with your teen and set out which rooms or spaces are off-limits and encourage them to relay this message to their party guests.

Be reasonable – Give your teen some responsibility and watch them rise to the occasion in a supportive way. We all know how volatile teenagers can be, with all those hormones; some feel that the entire world is against them! If there are disagreements, try not to get emotional and keep things calm.

We hope that the above tips go some way to making the event a roaring success and you can all celebrate the passing of another year.

How to Upgrade Your Outdoor Space in 5 Simple Steps

Now more than ever, people are looking for savvy and budget-friendly ways to increase the value of their property. It's something that I'm working on, slowly and with a very small budget but we all have to start somewhere.

Improving the garden is a great place to start. With some redecoration and landscaping projects, you can transform your outdoor space into a stylish and functional area, perfect for entertaining and relaxing and this can often be done frugally. Outdoor improvements help you to make the most of your garden while adding more value, too.

Here are five of the best ways to upgrade your outdoor space and boost the value of your home in the process.

Define the space

Firstly, having a clear vision and plan for your garden will help you to start your project efficiently. Working with direction means you can prioritise tasks accordingly and focus on the areas that require the most of your attention.

Try to decide whether you’d like a dining space, a lounging area, or a tranquil garden retreat. If you’re working with a patio or covered area, you could use outdoor rugs, distinct furniture arrangements, and large planters to create distinct zones.

outdoor seating

Add comfortable seating

Secondly, it’s worth choosing quality furnishings.

Maximise your budget to invest in comfortable, weather-resistant garden furniture like teak or rattan. Keep things inviting with cushions and throws but remember to store them safely inside when the cold weather returns.

Make sure you’re only adding furniture to give your garden practical value. If you’re planning on selling your home, anything bulky or too ornamental may distract potential buyers.

Add lighting for ambience

The right lighting will help you to achieve the perfect welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’ve installed a pergola or you’re improving the patio, little lanterns or festoon lights add a warm, inviting glow to your space.

String lights can be draped across trees, fences or other structures in your garden and they’re perfect for garden gatherings. If you can’t connect a mains power supply to your patio, there are plenty of solar-powered options to choose from, too.

garden light

Incorporate greenery

Planting shrubs, flowers and young trees can significantly improve the ambience of your outdoor space. Try to choose a mix of potted plants, hanging baskets and vertical features to give your garden shape and texture.

It’s best to choose plants native to the UK or those that can withstand the local climate. However, if you’ve got plenty of time on your hands or you’d like to work with a gardener, you could create a fantastic display with exotic and subtropical plants.

Don’t forget the personal touches

Finally, you should add some unique and memorable elements to reflect your style. Consider outdoor ornaments, sculptures, or a small water feature to create a focal point in your garden.

If you have plenty of outdoor seating, a fire pit could enhance the space aesthetically and effortlessly improve evenings with friends. Softer accessories like outdoor rugs and pillows might feel more inviting but remember that using these will be weather-dependent.

By following these five steps, you can transform a plain garden or patio into a beautiful, functional space ready for any occasion. Whether you're hosting a summer barbecue or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars, these upgrades will give you the perfect retreat.

Why Chiang Mai is on my bucket list

Chiang Mai

While my bucket list seems to be ever-increasing, Chiang Mai in Thailand has long been near the top of it for a variety of reasons. While many immediately think of Bangkok when they hear Thailand, Chiang Mai offers the perfect alternative to the chaos of the capital city while still being very vibrant, crammed with history and culture but more laid back and easier to navigate.

When it comes to travel, planning and researching a destination is one of my favourite things to do (check out my post about planning a safe family adventure) which is also part of the reason why I find Chiang Mai so appealing. I know I wouldn't cope with the constant traffic and chaos of the Capital city and while yes I would definitely spend time slowing down at a beach spot, Chiang Mai offers so much in terms of heritage and culture.

Here are my 5 reasons why Chiang Mai is on my bucket list

1. Cooler Weather than Bangkok

As Chiang Mai is located in the north of the country and is surrounded by mountains, its climate is milder and therefore more bearable than the capital city.

2. Easier to navigate

Chiang Mai is far more compact than Bangkok with a smaller population making it a walkable city. Many of the main sights and attractions are within walking distance of each other and the old city which is surrounded by a moat is only 1.5km in size. There are also plenty of tuk-tuks if you do get tired of walking.

Chiang Mai

3. Hundreds of Temples

Chiang Mai is over 7 centuries old and is the perfect location for those who love history and learning about ancient cultures. There are more than 300 temples to visit many of which are older than the ones you will find in Bangkok.

4. Amazing Food Scene

If you are keen to try traditional Thai food then Chiang Mai is the perfect spot for that as you can find many cafes serving up traditional regional dishes. Chiang Mai is also known for having some of the best coffee in the country and you will find coffee shops on virtually every corner in the city.

Chiang Mai coffee

5. Plenty of accommodation options

No matter what your budget there is accommodation for young backpackers to those who want a nature boutique feel to 5-star hotels with all the facilities and plenty that perfect for business trips such as Chiang Mai seminar hotel.

I'm really hoping to be able to take my kids to Thailand at some point in the next few years and we will definitely be opting for Chiang Mai over the capital city, for all the reasons mentioned and more. While the capital city has it's own allure I rather opt for a more laid-back but equally interesting and culturally rich city If you want to learn more about this beautiful region then do check out Chiang Mai's official tourism website

How to Cut Down On Family Spending

23/08/2024

budgetting

The cost of living has been hard, for so many people, and many families are looking to cut down on family spending. This is certainly something I have been doing in recent times to help combat rising costs but this can be hard to balance with still wanting to be able to provide a comfortable life for your family and memories with your kids.

Here are a few strategies that can help you cut back without sacrificing too much.

Create a Family Budget

First, to get a clear picture of your finances, you should try and create a monthly budget as this can help you control your spending.

Write down your incoming and outgoing cash flow, totalling your household take-home pay and dedicating a percentage to different categories, such as rent/mortgage, bills, food, and entertainment. If you find that you are spending all of your money each month, you need to go through your expenses and find ways to cut back and make savings. If possible you should also have a small percentage of your income going towards savings. There are budgeting apps that you can use to create your own budget or you could make your own spreadsheet.

savings

Reduce Transport Expenses

Transport is often one of the biggest costs for parents. If you drive then regular trips such as school runs, grocery shopping, days out and visiting friends and family can quickly add up in petrol costs. One of the easiest ways to save money is to walk and cycle where possible or if taking public transport is cheaper than start using that. If you have more than one car, consider a multi-car insurance policy as these could offer savings and help in simplifying your paperwork and make sure to do price comparisons every year.

Save On Household Bills

Bills are another major expense for families, especially in the colder months of the year. While household bills will always be a significant cost, there are always ways to reduce the amount you have to pay each month. This can include:

*Switching providers
*Using a smart thermostat
*Using energy-efficient appliances
*Turning off lights when not in use
*Washing clothes on a cold setting
*Air drying clothes
*Taking advantage of off-peak tariffs for electricity
*Batch cooking
*Taking shorter and/or colder showers

Cut Down On Grocery Costs

Putting food on the table, especially at the moment can cost a fortune, particularly if you have many mouths to feed! It can be hard to strike a balance of nutritious meals that the whole family enjoy. There are however ways to help bring down costs, here are a few I've implemented over the past few years.

* Shopping at cheaper supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl
* Using clear shopping lists to help avoid impulse purchases
* Buying supermarket-own goods over branded products
* Buying in bulk
* Doing simple meal prep and batch cooking
* Taking advantage of discounts and loyalty schemes

Cut back on non-essentials

Do you have a gym membership you are just not using? Do you need 5 different streaming services? Now is the time to cut any subscriptions you are not genuinely using to the full.

Reduce eating out, even if you don't see yourself as someone who eats out because it's not a restaurant, perhaps it's just that daily coffee out or bakery treat - either way they can go, pack lunch, take a coffee flask - these are both quick ways to reduce outgoings.

Stop buying clothes new and switch to upcycling and thrift platforms such as Vinted where you can find clothes in excellent condition for a quarter of the price.

Focus on free days out

When it comes to weekends and school holidays, while the odd treat day out is often needed, the focus should be embracing the free activities you have on your doorstep, you would be surprised how many there are. Here are few ideas for free days out and remember take snack, water bottles and packed lunches.

1. Free museums
2. Explore the local country park
3. Trip to the beach
4. Hiking local trails
5. Try out Geocaching
6. Going for a bike ride

free day

If you are looking to cut back on your monthly costs, this post should give you a few ideas. Many families have been struggling in recent years, but you should know that there are always ways to save money each month while still providing a happy and comfortable lifestyle for the whole family.

How to be prepared when visiting a show home

house keys

Show homes and open property viewings often look great, they are designed to impress and have been dressed up to show the property in a picture-perfect way. With their stylish décor and impeccable presentation, it’s easy to get swept away by the allure of a potential new home.

However potential homeowners need to look beyond the surface and ask the right questions, in fact taking a pen and paper with you on your viewing and making notes of anything you need more information on, can be really handy. Surprisingly, many buyers are unsure what to inquire about, leaving them vulnerable to making hasty decisions. A show home is just a showcase, and you don’t want to find any unfortunate surprises after you’ve moved in.

Here are some things you should keep in mind when going on an open house or show home viewing.

Always Do Your Research

There are so many nice places to live in the UK, but appearances are sometimes just skin-deep. Before you get your heart set on a property, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of your needs and wants. Consider factors such as family size, lifestyle, budget, and location.

If it's a new home then research the builder and the development to get a sense of their reputation, as well as the overall community. This groundwork will you formulate your questions and decide whether this is somewhere you want to settle down.

new home

What to Look for During the Tour

While the aesthetics of a show property are undeniably appealing, you need to look beyond the surface and ask some questions to determine whether the other new build homes will be a good fit for you

Here are some key areas to ask focus on:

Layout & Flow: Think about whether the layout accommodates your needs and family size. Is there sufficient storage? Pay attention to how the rooms connect and flow and if that will work for you.

Functionality: Is the home practical? Ideally, you want conveniently located outlets, good lighting and room sizes that suit your needs.

Natural Light & Views: Consider the orientation of the rooms and how it affects sunlight throughout the day.

Materials & Finishes: Examine the quality of materials used in the countertops, cabinetry and appliances. Are they durable or likely to require future maintenance?

Visualising Yourself in the Space

The ultimate goal of visiting a show home is to imagine your own life within its walls so it would do no good to move in somewhere you don’t see yourself living in. Think about how you would personalise the space to make it truly yours, whether with furniture or the décor.

Also, carefully think about whether the home accommodates your lifestyle. Are there sufficient outdoor spaces for entertaining and relaxing? Is the location convenient for your daily commute and nearby important amenities?

The Benefits of Choosing an Active Holiday

active holiday

Planning your next holiday?

Whether you’re going solo or you’ve been saving up for a family retreat, an active holiday could be more rewarding than you’d expect. From cycling through peaceful vineyards, kayaking down rivers or getting fiercely competitive on the tennis courts, there are so many reasons to ditch the sun loungers.

Personally, I really struggle to sit still, even on holiday, being active brings me a lot of joy and is has positive impacts physically and mentally as well as the social benefits of keeping active on holiday as it opens up opportunities to meet like-minded people.

Physical health benefits

When you’re taking a break, it’s important to spend time relaxing and stepping away from things that cause you stress in your daily life, however, this doesn’t have to mean lounging by the pool all day, as nice as that is the novelty can wear off and you can also strike a good balance by both chilling out and getting active.

Swimming, hiking, and cycling are usually easy to access and they can all improve cardiovascular health, get your blood pumping in a low-impact way and help build strength and enhance overall fitness, plus they are activities that are suitable for all ages. They also give opportunities to explore your surroundings differently and can be a great way to discover beautiful routes with spectacular views.

Just as important as total rest days, active recovery is essential for any training plan. If you’re already working towards some fitness goals, taking time to move your body with gentle, low-impact activities could be a wonderful way to maintain fitness while you’re away from home with minimal stress.

Mental health and wellness

Many of us book a holiday in the hope that simply escaping the routine will be enough of a mental health break. According to the Family Holiday Charity, people who don’t take holidays or even just take time out for themselves, are more likely to experience high stress levels.

When taking a break from everyday life is paired with physical activities, the benefits are even more profound. Enjoying sports can boost our mood, improve confidence, and strengthen the immune system.

Plus, being active on holiday usually means spending more time outdoors - and the holistic benefits are well reported. For example, cycling holidays make a brilliant way to stay active all while exploring new environments. Being immersed in nature boosts our mood and helps us feel more relaxed.

Social and cultural engagement

Finally, participating in outdoor activities and sports on holiday means you’ll be much more likely to meet new people! Whether you get involved in friendly football matches or long-distance cycling tours, you’ll usually join up with like-minded people.

Even if you’re going solo or exploring new hiking routes as a couple, meeting new people along the way is a fantastic part of the experience. From chatting to the hosts at family-run restaurants to meeting local business owners, adventures are always more memorable with new faces.

When it comes to forming a deeper connection with local communities and different cultures, getting active could be the motivation you need. Guided tours, local sports fixtures, and cultural excursions all provide ample opportunities.

Overview

When you’re on holiday, it might be tempting to spend all day on the beach. However, getting involved in sports and activities could help you to get more out of your break - and feel better once you return home, too.

An active holiday will leave you feeling mentally refreshed, boost your confidence, and make lasting memories.

Exploring Little Venice with Go Boat

Little Venice

On a recent trip to London we stayed at the Permier Inn in Paddington Basin, an ever growing area which has been regenerated in the last two decades to create a creative and vibrant place to explore, that runs along the canals near Paddington Station. A short walk from the basin you will find Little Venice, this popular spot is worth the hype, with canal boats, waterside cafes and tree line streets, this is an area we have always enjoyed visiting.

For the first time however we got the chance to explore Little Venice and Regents canal from the water with GoBoat, offering a whole new perspective and experience of one of our favourite spots in the capital city.

GoBoat Paddington offers self-drive boat hire on their eco-friendly electric boats that have room for up to 8 people, which makes it very reasonable when you split the cost between so many for such a unique experience. You don't need a boat licence and they teach you everything you need to know to be able to enjoy the waterways at your own pace.

Little Venice London

The boats all have picnic tables so do take snacks, although Paddington Basin is alcohol-free location which is for the best as you are sharing the waterways with houseboats and other vessels. The also ofcourse provide boyancy aids and children are welcome to join although the driver must be over 18. My boys absolutely loved seeing London from the water.

We were very lucky with a gloriously sunny day that meant we could really soak in how beautiful Little Venice is (my dream is to live on a houseboat one day) as well as taking in all the sights of Paddington Basin, Maida Vale and the Maida Vale tunnel, Regents park with glimpses of London Zoo and Camden lock.

Maida Vale Tunnel

Once you get to grips with the basics of the boat such a steering, stopping and reversing, it's a very relaxing and feels like a world away from the busy and bustling streets of London and it's such a unique way to see the city.

I highly recommend this and you can also share the cost amongst a group of friends or family. Currently prices for up to 8 people are from - 1hr £65,  2hrs £89 and 3hrs £119

* Disclosure - we were kindly invited to try out GoBoat in Paddington in exchange for an honest review. Words and thoughts 100% my own. AD

astrology

Astrology isn’t just about predicting your future, it's about understanding yourself on a deeper level. Your sun, moon and rising signs represent different parts of your personality and can even offer insights into what makes you you, your relationships, your personality traits and your interior design preferences.

Research from fitted furniture specialists Hammonds highlights what your décor should look like according to your Zodiac sign. If you’re looking for a new way to update your home’s design, here’s what you need to know.

Aries

Choose bold yet minimalistic designs. Opt for a black and white base with a red or pink statement wall. Combining mood lighting with industrial textures like metal and concrete can also suit their passionate spirit.

Taurus

Try luxurious, nature-inspired décor for this comfort-loving sign. Soft throws, velvet cushions and pale wood furniture can help create a comfortable and indulgent space. Pastel shades and large windows are essential for blending cottage-core aesthetics with a hint of luxury.

Gemini

Geminis thrive in vibrant spaces. Pair bright colours with airy fabrics to reflect dynamic energy. A mid-century modern style with quirky elements offers the perfect mix of fun and fashion.

Cancer

A Nostalgic look is ideal for this sign. Antique mirrors, personal photographs and soft pastels can make the space inviting. A shabby-chic style with flowing fabrics and gentle lighting can also nurture their love for a cosy, private environment.

Leo

A Leo’s home should make a statement. Gold accents and rich fabrics create a dramatic, Hollywood glam space. Spotlight lighting and luxurious details are also essential to ensure the home is always ready to impress.

Virgo

A Virgo favours simplicity and functionality. Clean lines, neutral tones and clever storage solutions create a clutter-free and serene space. An absence of clutter can also positively impact mental health. The Scandinavian style resonates with Virgo’s meticulous nature, ensuring a stylish and practical look.

Libra

Enjoy balance and beauty with soft pinks and elegant fabrics like cotton and linen. Take inspiration from the Regency style by combining gold accents and soft lighting to create a harmonious, sophisticated environment.

Scorpio

A Scorpio’s décor should be intense and dramatic. Contrast deep shades of black or brown with white and red for a striking visual impact. Japandi suits Scorpio’s preference for a clean yet impactful aesthetic.

Sagittarius

Opt for items from across the globe. Moroccan rugs, framed maps and bold colours like purple and blue reflect their love for adventure. Maximalist décor is ideal and don’t be afraid to try diverse patterns and textures to create an exciting space.

Capricorn

Natural materials and earthy tones are ideal for Capricorn’s. Dark woods and plenty of greenery make the home rustic yet elegant. The natural beauty aligns with Capricorn’s grounded nature, offering a timeless and sophisticated space.

Aquarius

Aquarius loves bold colours and eclectic design. Electric blue, aquamarine and vibrant accents define their tropical style. Upcycled furniture and natural materials highlight this sign’s creativity, while lots of natural light shows their desire for freedom.

Pisces

A romantic, ocean-inspired vibe is the way to go for Pisces. Soft fabrics and a blue palette work well for this, and unique finds from charity shops add a personal touch and reflect this sign’s creative nature.

Why you should consider a wedding abroad

overseas wedding

If you are in the planning stage of your wedding then why not consider a wedding abroad? There are many fantastic reasons for going down this route and if you are someone who is looking for something unique and has a passion for travel, this could be the perfect option.

Here are a few reasons why a wedding overseas is a great idea.

1. Perfect for couples looking for less fuss

Many people don't want a big wedding and rather have a smaller more intimate affair. Getting married abroad will make it much easier to reduce numbers (you have the perfect excuse to not invite "that one cousin") and help keep things simple.

2. Guaranteed Sunshine

While no destination is sunny 100% of the time, many are far more reliable than the UK. If you are especially keen on a beach or outdoor wedding, then opt for warmer climates with consistently good weather such as Spain, Greece or even further afield like South Africa are all good choices.

3. Combine a wedding and honeymoon

Having a wedding overseas can actually be quite a budget-friendly option as firstly your are likely to keep numbers of invites much smaller and you can combine your wedding and honeymoon into one trip (or make it a base from which to explore more)

4. Fantastic venue choices

You can really let you imagination go wild as the world is filled with incredible venues and hotels perfect for a wedding. A castle in France,  a beach in Thailand, why not, or what about super modern hotel wedding venues Singapore.

wedding flowers

Things you need to consider when planning an overseas wedding.

Make a budget for essential costs.

Take into account for legal fees, flights, accommodation and venue wedding package. Decide if you will cover some of the travel costs of your key bridal party such as the maid of honour, best man or bridesmaids if you're having any.  You will also need to be clear with your invited guests what they are expected to pay in terms of travel and accommodation and do this as far in advance as possible.

Get your paperwork in order

As a rule of thumb, most countries will require the following paperwork, firstly your passport and birth certificates. Some countries require a ‘Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage’ which you will need to obtain from a local department of foreign affairs. Some countries will also require an ‘apostille’ stamp that makes them legal in the country where the marriage takes place. It also goes without saying that the venue you choose will need to be fully licensed under government regulations.

The great thing about weddings abroad is being able to say "I do" with the people who mean the most to you in a beautiful location. it means a step away from reality and adds to the magic of it all and it surprisingly can also be a more budget-friendly option than a big do here in the UK.

If your looking for more tips do check out this previous post I wrote to help you find the perfect venue

Jewellery tips for Sensitive Skin

jewellery

Sensitive skin can affect many areas of your life. One area that is often overlooked is jewellery - many people like to accessorise and add personal style with jewellery, but some jewellery can cause irritation and discomfort. This is why anyone with sensitive skin needs to understand how to choose jewellery that will be comfortable to wear and allow you to enjoy wearing different pieces. Read on to find out more.

Understanding Materials that Are Safe for Sensitive Skin

First, you need to know what materials are safe for those with sensitive skin. The best option is to choose hypoallergenic metals, which are designed to minimise reactions. These metals include sterling silver, platinum, titanium, and high-karat gold. Some metals, meanwhile, are known to cause irritation - these include metals like nickel and can result in redness, itching, and rashes. Therefore, you should always read the label or online information about jewellery to find nickel-free jewellery.

Tips for Caring for Your Jewellery & Skin

It is also important to know how to care for both your jewellery and skin. You must make a concerted effort to keep your jewellery clean, which will prevent dirt and oils from causing irritation. Be sure to use a gentle jewellery cleaner that will remove dirt without causing damage, and wipe down regularly with a soft cloth. Italian Renaissance

Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance, is one of the most popular tourist destinations for travellers worldwide, especially for those who love history, like myself. If you’re heading to Europe this year, whether on your own or with family and are looking for somewhere beautiful but also packed with places that are educational, historical and culturally significant then Italy should be on your list.

When I took my boys Interrailing in 2022 we were lucky enough to spend time in the Turin, Levanto, Pisa Florence and Rome and prior to having kids I was also lucky enough to visit Venice and Milan, however, there are still many places I would like to visit, especially for the art, ancient ruins and stunning landscapes.

Touching back on Italy’s Renaissance heritage, I thought I would share more about it and give a little insight into it.

What is the Renaissance era?

The period spanning the 14th to the 17th centuries marked a profound transformation in European history and promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art after the middle ages. Today, the Renaissance legacy continues to captivate visitors, with many travelling from far and wide to explore the heritage.

Florence

Florence

Florence, often regarded as the epicentre of the Renaissance, has an interesting past.

The Uffizi Gallery, home to seminal works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo stands as a testament to the city's artistic heritage. Nearby, the Duomo, with its magnificent dome engineered by Brunelleschi, exemplifies architectural innovation.

A short walk away, Michelangelo's David at the Accademia Gallery embodies the Renaissance ideal of human beauty and strength. For those wishing to delve deeper, escorted tours to Italy offer insightful experiences, guiding visitors through Florence's history.

Rome

Rome

Rome is another key Renaissance hotspot. The Vatican Museums boast an extensive collection of art, culminating in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo's frescoes, particularly the ceiling and The Last Judgment, are revered as some of the greatest accomplishments in Western art. Additionally, Raphael's Rooms, with their masterful murals, illustrate the intricate relationship between art and papal authority.

Venice

Venice, a city of canals and captivating architecture, showcases a distinct Renaissance heritage. St. Mark's Basilica, with its opulent mosaics and intricate designs, reflects the city's wealth and artistic prowess.

The Doge's Palace, once the political heart of Venice, features grand chambers adorned by works from Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto. The Gallerie dell'Accademia offers a rich collection of Venetian Renaissance art, bringing the city's history to life.

It’s predicted that Venice will be underwater by 2150, so if you’re hoping to explore the city, there’s no time like the present.

Venice

Milan

Milan played a pivotal role during the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, remains a masterpiece that draws art enthusiasts globally.

The Sforza Castle, once a residence of Milan's ruling families, now serves as a museum complex showcasing Renaissance art and artefacts.

Lesser-known renaissance trails

Beyond the renowned cities, Italy has plenty of other Renaissance gems.

Such as Mantua's Palazzo Ducale, with its extensive frescoes and grand halls, you can see inside the courtly life of the Gonzaga family.

Ferrara's Este Castle, surrounded by a moat and filled with art, demonstrates the cultural power of the Este dynasty.

If you haven’t already planned your trip, what’s stopping you?

Worried that you will feel out of place at the gym? Does it put you off going?  You wouldn’t be alone – many who opt against exercise do so because they worry that they don’t look like the typical gym-goer. Feeling good about yourself and comfortable in what you're wearing can really help boost your confidence to work out more proactively and effectively.

Choosing the right activewear

Firstly what is activewear and why is it important? Yes in theory you can wear anything to they gym, however, activewear does serve a purpose as it is specifically designed for exercise and is often more breathable, supportive and durable. High-waisted leggings are suitable for all body shapes as they provide support and allow for movement and flexibility. Seamless leggings and tops are also popular for their ability to move with your body while preventing chafing. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you cool and dry during intense workouts.

Practical accessories

When visiting the gym or partaking in any sport or physical activity,  some accessories are a must such as a durable water bottle to keep your drinks cool and if you intend to break a sweat then a small absorbable chamois is very useful.

Fitness trackers, such as the Fitbit or Apple Watch, are growing more popular with Brits – and they not only help monitor your progress but also come in sleek designs that look great on your wrist. These accessories ensure you stay hydrated, organised and motivated while adding a stylish flair to your gym look.

Maintain your hair health

Keeping your hair looking great during workouts can be a challenge but a little care can go a long way. Opt for hairstyles that stay in place, such as high ponytails, braids or buns. Using headbands or hair ties made from soft, non-damaging materials is also ideal for keeping your hair secure without risking breakage. Incorporating hair vitamins into your routine, meanwhile, can strengthen your hair, making it more resilient to the stress of frequent washing and styling.

Skincare for gym-goers

Sweating it out at the gym can take a toll on your skin, making a good skincare routine essential. Before working out, cleanse your face to remove any makeup or impurities that could clog your pores. When you're all done, use a gentle cleanser to remove sweat and bacteria, followed by a lightweight moisturiser to hydrate your skin. Products containing salicylic acid or tea tree oil can help prevent breakouts caused by sweat. Some brands offer skincare lines specifically designed for active individuals, ensuring your skin remains clear and healthy.

Footwear that fits and supports

The best gym shoes provide support, stability and cushioning to prevent injuries during workouts. Look for shoes that are specifically designed for the type of exercise you do, whether it's running, weightlifting or cross-training.

Additionally, selecting shoes that complement your workout attire can enhance your overall look. Popular sports brands offer a variety of stylish and functional gym shoes that cater to different activities and fashion preferences, helping you stay comfortable and injury-free while looking stylish.
