Summer is now truly over as we embrace all that Autumn has to offer which we also means we wave goodbye to the 5 week long Street Food Cardiff Festival or SFC for short at Sophia Gardens, like most we love seeing events like this being organised in Cardiff as it gives a platform to the food truck movement happening here like many other cities and allows for smaller independent food business to share their creations with hungry visitors in the Welsh Capital.
This is not the first time we have been as it's somewhat of an annual event and my eldest loves going. We decided to head into town one Sunday and made an beeline for SFC as it had that laid-back atmosphere and social feel we wanted on a weekend, with good music and of course an array of food options. This year they also year had a small kids area with a few hay bales, badminton rackets, colourful bunting and of course the popular tuk tuk vehicles to sit on and eat your food. Also this is pretty much an all-weather spot with the Big Tent providing loads of under cover space to chill
All of our favourite food trucks and pop-ups were there such as Milgi bar, a popular plant based cafe bar in the capital as well as Bother Thai, Bearded Taco, The Early Bird the Singha tent, Frontier Shipping Container bar serving up some craft beers and the Prosecco trike (a personal favourite of mine).
While John opted for a Meat and Greek pitta with chicken and halloumi I went for the vegan version at Milgi bar and the kids tucked into some vegan ice-cream and the most indulgent Donuts from The Early Bird. We really couldn't fault the food which was served up with a smile and enthusiasm and the atmosphere was really good too as well as the bonus of being a very family friendly event located to the green lung of the city that is Bute Park.
SCF the organisers are a collective of street food traders that have converted disused buildings and yards, doing foodie pop-ups across the city with Street Food Cardiff in Sophia Gardens becoming an yearly event. However I do feel this annual food festival could do with a little bit of a creative shake-up as the setup in terms of decoration and design and whats on offer have been pretty much the same for the past few years. The thing is Cardiff is pretty small as cities go and I love that creative events like this happen would be fantastic to see a slightly different approach or concept next year just to keep things fresh, although ion course I know this is easier said than done.
As I said before the location of the festival was great, right next to Bute park, meaning once we had filled up on food we could walk it off and let the kids go wild while burning off that sugar excess from the Donuts. Its was a great way to spend a Sunday and I do hope Street Food Cardiff comes back for another year and I look forward to more pop-ups from this fantastic collective.
The food this year was excellent :) Lovely pictures xx
