Connecting with Nature at Bluestone National Park Resort

03/01/2017

wild and free

When life starts to feel really manic, which is pretty easy in these modern times as with thousands of people chattering across social media in your pocket it can sometimes feel hard to find the quiet, to reconnect with nature and as a family. If your a regular reader to my blog you will know we love spending time outdoors but even so it can be limited to weekends when it's all four of us and so breaks away that allow you to just stop for a moment and step away from the chaos are what we all need from time to time and Bluestone in West Wales allows for just that.

We recently visited Bluestone for the second time, although the first as a family of four and we had four gloriously dry days to explore, discover and soak in all the fresh air. As soon as we arrived at our Skomer lodge which was perfectly located near the village and lake with forest walks running behind it, we spotted some rabbits happily enjoying the sunshine around the lodge and knew it was just the right place to be.

Forest adventures

There is so much on offer at Bluestone and they really encourage free-range fun for all the family. Of course you can take up one of many extra activities but with so much freely available you don't have to spend a fortune to have fun. We spent most of the time walking along the forest walks down to Camp Smokey in the heart of the forest and enjoyed relaxing by the warmth of the campfire while the kids roasted marshmallows and even though the temperatures were low at times if your dress right it's the best way to spend an afternoon.

My eldest was also fascinated with all the bug hotels he came across and we spent an evening walking around the lake spotting wildlife. There is also the Treehouse outdoor play park with rope bridges and tunnels as well as an area for younger children and is a great spot for kids to run off some excess energy.

The resort does have free wifi although it's very limited to what you can view, you can of course pay to upgrade and stream videos but we made a point of not doing this as we didn't want any extra distractions and most of the time we left our phones in the lodge as their was simply no need for them  and by doing that it meant we were far more mindful of our time together.

The resort is really great for bikes which you can either hire or bring your own although if like us your happy to walk and it's dry its lovely to wander around. We also hired a buggy for 24hrs as that in itself is a lot of fun and always a hit with the kids and also means you can explore the length and breath of Bluestone.

After long days we make ourselves home in the very comfortable 3 bed Skomer lodge which was very warm and toasty despite the temperature dropping at night. We ate lunch at Camp Smokey a few times and picked up a few snacks when out on our adventures but at night time we usually sat down and enjoyed a nice family meal before relaxing together and watching a film. When it comes to keeping things simple and family focused than Bluestone is a fantastic choice and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. You can decided just how much or how little you want to do and thats the great thing about it, the choice is yours when it comes to what you want your Bluestone holiday to look like.

  11. I've read some fab things about this place; and your photos add to the hype! Great idea to keep your phones in the lodge and not pay for wifi. It is so nice to actually have time together as a family instead of half the world and your family.

  12. Sounds like a lovely break away from the usual hustle and bustle, I think it's great that you actively chose to leave your phones behind and stay of social media for as much as possible! It really is a time thief, and when in such a serene location it would have been sad to see the phones taking over again plus it sounded like you had some lovely family time! Beautiful photos too! xx #countrykids
