Exploring Early Pregnancy Symptoms and How to Handle Them

pregnancy

Having had two of my own children and now we are out of the toddler stage, I feel more reflective on my experience and there is something powerful about parents sharing what they have learnt or what to expect, with others. Pregnancy is an exciting and life-altering experience, but it is often coupled with numerous early symptoms that may be quite the ride. Many of those expecting experience an array of physical and mental symptoms during the first trimester as the body makes adjustments to pregnancy. Staying informed about changeable symptoms and their management may empower you to feel ready for this incredible journey. This article is meant as a gentle guide on some early pregnancy symptoms and their management.

Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms

Several initial physical changes occur in the early stages of pregnancy as your body adjusts to the growing baby. Let us look at pregnancy's most common early signs and symptoms.

1. Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is probably one of the most well-known pregnancy symptoms. However, it's not only confined to the morning, as nausea and vomiting can occur anytime during the day. About half of those expecting will experience some form of morning sickness from around six weeks into the pregnancy with some nausea or vomiting persisting beyond the first trimester.

How to Handle It:

Small and frequent meals help control blood sugar levels and ease nausea. Crackers, toast, or ginger-flavoured snacks can settle the stomach more quickly. Of course, remaining hydrated is also essential, drink water and/or fluids, such as ginger tea, until you start feeling better.

2. Fatigue

Feeling unusually tired and exhausted is very common in the early signs of pregnancy and it's something I struggled with. Your body works so hard to support the baby's growth, for some expecting, this makes them feel drained and need more rest. Hormonal shifts also contribute to leaving you fatigued.

How to Handle It:

Listening to your body and resting as much as you can, napping during the day when tired and trying to get a good night's sleep can be very helpful. Hydration and a balanced diet can also help provide energy. Do not hesitate to take a break, and do not overwork yourself.

3. Frequent Urination

Another early pregnancy symptom is an increased frequency of urination. This occurs as your growing uterus presses on your bladder, and your body works to eliminate waste more efficiently.

How to Handle It:

Although it may be difficult, water consumption is essential. Stay hydrated consistently throughout the day. Caffeine and sugary drinks should also be controlled since they irritate the bladder.

Emotional and Mental Well-Being

Physical changes come with early pregnancy, and their effects on emotions are mainly due to the numerous circulating hormones. Mood swings, anxiety, and even highly exciting and happy feelings are everyday experiences.

How to Handle It:

Talking with your partner, friends, or family can provide support and reassurance. Self-care approaches such as mindfulness, meditation, and gentle exercise can also be beneficial, as they can ease anxiety and stress. If feelings of sadness or depression persist, it is best to consult a medical professional.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Most of the early pregnancy symptoms are generally considered normal ones, but some indications may suggest complications. In case of severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or dizziness, contact your doctor immediately to rule out severe conditions, such as ectopic pregnancy.

Understanding the ever-changing symptoms of early pregnancy, such as nausea, fatigue, and mood swings, can be daunting.
